How Good a Listener Are You?
How Good a Listener Are You?
When someone speaks to you—are you truly listening, or just waiting for your turn to reply?
Listening isn’t just hearing words. It’s about tuning into meaning, emotion, and intent. It’s about helping the speaker feel heard, not just letting them talk. This short self-assessment helps you reflect on your listening habits and uncover whether you’re an active, attentive listener—or someone who could use a little fine-tuning.
You can take the “Evaluate your listening skills” assessment here:
Why Listening Matters
Great communication doesn’t start with talking—it starts with listening. Whether you’re leading a team, supporting a friend, or resolving conflict, your ability to listen deeply sets the tone for trust, clarity, and connection.
The strongest form of listening is called active listening. It goes beyond just catching the words—it involves noticing the speaker’s tone, energy, and emotion, and reflecting that back through your body language, words, and attention.
Habits of an Active Listener
Think of the best listeners in your life—they likely do some or all of the following:
-
They don’t interrupt. They pause, give space, and let the speaker finish.
-
They use eye contact and open body language to show presence.
-
They offer subtle cues—nods, short responses, or verbal encouragers like “go on” or “I hear you.”
-
They don’t rush to solve or analyze while the other person is still speaking.
-
They acknowledge emotion, not just content: “That sounds frustrating.”
-
They ask thoughtful follow-up questions—both open and closed—to deepen understanding.
You don’t need to master all of these to be a good listener—but becoming aware of your natural tendencies is a great place to start.
